Michael Spyres has made his successful debut this last month in the Salzburg Whitsun Festival with Riccardo Muti conducting. In April 2009 Michael Spyres debuted at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano as Belfiore in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims in the production by Ronconi, conducted by Ottavio Dantone. During the following summer 2009 he sang Raoul in the uncut version of Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots for the SummerScape Festival in New York and a gala concert for Attersee Klassik / Austria.

Important current and upcoming engagements include the title role in Leonard Bernstein’s Candide for his debut with the Vlaamse Opera in Gent and Antwerp and a new production of Billy Budd (Novice) for Bilbao. In February 2010 he made his debut with Opera Ireland with Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. In May  2010 he will be singing Ozia in Betulia Liberata with Riccardo Muti at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival.  Subsequently he will also sing Betulia Liberata as well as the Ravenna Festival. For the Salzburg Festival 2010 he will be Tybalt in Roméo et Juliette. In July 2011 he will be singing Néocle in Rossini's Le siège de Corinthe in concert performances at the Wildbad Rossini Festival, and also for a CD recording on NAXOS. In October 2010 he will be Tamino in a new production of Zauberflöte at the Opéra de Wallonie in Liège. His comeback to La Scala di Milano will be in 2011 as Rodrigo in Rossini’s La donna del lago, conducted by Roberto Abbado. The same role he will be repeating at the Royal Opera Covent Garden in London in 2013. His New York City debut was with Schumann’s Faust Szenen in April 2010 with the Amerian Symphony Orchestra. In May 2011 he will be making his debut at the State Opera Dresden as Gianetto in Rossini's La gazza ladra and in June 2011 he will be singing Ramiro in Rossini's La Cenerentola for the Teatro Comunale di BolognaFor the 2008/2009 season Michael Spyres was member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he made his debut as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte already in June 2008, sang for the season opening gala and also appeared as Steuermann in Der fliegende Holländer.In July 2008 he sang for the first time Rossini’s Otello at the Wildbad Rossini Festival / Germany. The production has been commercially released on CD as well. Other important recent engagements were his UK debut in London as Fernand in a concert performance of La Favorite in November 2008, Duca in productions of Rigoletto for Springfield/Missouri (October 2009), and an opera gala concert in the Tchaikovsky Conservatory Moscow (with Konstantin Orbelian) in February 2009. His Italy debut took place in 2006 at the Teatro San Carlo of Naples, Italy (Jaquino in Fidelio). In 2007 Michael toured Japan as Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata.

Michael Spyres was born in Mansfield, Missouri U.S.A. where he grew up in a family of musicians. In 2002 the Governor of Missouri presented Michael and his family the award of "Most Musical Family". Mr. Spyres began his studies in the U.S. then continued his studies in the Konservatorium Wien of Vienna, Austria. He was a Young Artist with Opera Theatre Saint Louis then shortly there after made his main stage operatic debut with Opera Theatre Saint Louis’ touring production as Rodolfo in La Boheme. He has performed such roles as Albert Herring, Duca inRigoletto, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Alfredo in La Traviata and Hoffmann. In addition to his opera career he has a very active oratorio schedule in which he has performed Handel's Messiah, Bach's Weihnachts OratoriumMozart's Requiem, and Honegger's Le Roi David to name a few. Mr. Spyres is a three-time Regional winner of the MET auditions and winner of the Midwest MacAllister Awards. In addition to singing throughout the Midwest of the U.S.A he has performed as a soloist in Austria, Belgium, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, and South Africa. He has sung at the  Eremitage in St. Petersburg (operatic concerts with Konstantin Orbelian in 2007 and 2008). In July 2007 he performed and recorded with the label NAXOS the role of Alberto from Rossini's comic opera La Gazzetta in the Bad Wildbad Rossini Festival.
